Location
Radiohead’s fondness for unusual or historic sites is well known: an exceptional site was therefore needed for their only summer concert in Switzerland. With its 500 metre marble facade, the Quarry of Andonces in Saint-Triphon offers an atypical, natural site that the group immediately fell in love with.
The Quarry of Andonces, an extraordinary site in the Rhône valley, offers a natural environment and an exceptional climate (long hours of sunshine and absence of local fog) in the heart of St Triphon's hills. It was created when the Alps were formed more than 250 million years ago and has been occupied since the Bronze Age.
A place brimming with history (Celtic and Roman), this black marble quarry was worked from ancient times right through to the last century. The site is on the "Via Francigena", the road to the north used by the Romans. In the Middle Ages, it underwent a revival as a route for commerce and pilgrims. Today, the "Via Francigena" is a major cultural route of the Council of Europe.
The site therefore occupies a strategic geographical location half-way between Lake Geneva and the canton of Valais, close to France and Italy, and benefits from a close-knit inter-cantonal and international network of communications.
Moreover, this will be the first time a concert has been held at the site, which can accommodate up to 20,000 spectators.
